1. Get a song file
Limelight plays audio files you own. Nothing uploads anywhere, the song and your recording stay on this device.
- Bought it on iTunes? Open the Music app, find the song, right click it, choose Show in Finder, then drag that file anywhere onto this page.
- Bandcamp or another store? Press their download button, then drag the file in from your Downloads folder.
- Streaming only? Apple Music and Spotify streams are locked by those services and cannot be used here. Buying the song once, about a dollar on iTunes or Bandcamp, gives you a file you own forever.
2. Lyrics mostly handle themselves
When a song loads, Limelight checks your saved lyrics, then looks the song up on lrclib.net, a free community lyrics library. Found lyrics simply appear, timed to the music. If nothing turns up, press Find online to search by hand, or Tap to time: paste the words, press play, and tap once as each line starts. Leave a line blank for a guitar solo and the screen clears there.
3. Sound check
Press Check and sing one line. Limelight listens and sets your mic level for you. Headphones on, always, or the song bleeds into your mic.
4. Record and keep it
Press Record, you get a 3, 2, 1 countdown, then sing. Press Stop, watch it back, press Download. The take lives only in this tab until you download it, so download before you close.
On a phone
Use Safari on iPhone and iPad, it is the only one that installs properly there. Set Shape to Phone for a tall video that fills a phone screen. Your screen is kept awake while you record, and when the take is ready press Save or share to put it straight in your camera roll. Singing over another tab does not work on phones at all, use an audio file.
5. Make it feel like a real app
Limelight installs like any app and works offline afterwards. On Chrome or Edge, press Install Limelight in the Install card, or the little install icon in the address bar. On iPhone or iPad, tap Share in Safari, then Add to Home Screen.
Singing over another tab
On desktop Chrome or Edge you can skip the file entirely: switch Backing track to Another tab, pick the tab that is playing your song, turn on Also share tab audio, and put the two windows side by side. Type the artist and title, press Find online for lyrics, and tap the song just started right on the first beat.
